Peru's Ministry of Environment (MINAM) has distinguished the Eco Amazonia Lodge Ecotourism Concession as an OECM (Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measure), recognizing its contribution to in situ biodiversity conservation, the care of the territory and ancestral knowledge, and strengthening the 30x30 Goal.

“The Ministry of Environment distinguishes the OECM "Ecotourism Concession Eco Amazonia Lodge" for its contribution to in situ biodiversity conservation and the care of the territory and ancestral knowledge, strengthening the 30x30 Goal and a sustainable future.”
What is an OECM?
OECM stands for "Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures", a category recognized by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). These are areas that, while not formally designated as protected natural areas, contribute effectively and sustainably to in situ biodiversity conservation. Recognized OECMs are registered in the Global OECM Database managed by UNEP-WCMC, granting them international visibility and recognition.
Why does this matter?
- 1Eco Amazonia is one of only a handful of concessions in Peru recognized as an OECM, alongside Los Amigos, Taricaya Ecoreserve, Paraíso Amazónico, Lago Preto Paredón, and Tingana.
- 2Our 4,800+ hectares of rainforest in Madre de Dios now officially count toward Peru's national conservation target.
- 3It validates that private ecotourism can deliver conservation outcomes on par with formal protected areas.
- 4Peru currently protects approximately 17.9% of its land and needs to nearly double that to reach the 30x30 Goal by 2030.
The 30x30 Goal
The 30x30 Goal is an international commitment adopted at COP15 in Montreal (December 2022) under the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. It aims to conserve at least 30% of the world's terrestrial and marine areas by 2030 through protected areas and other effective conservation measures such as OECMs.
